The society portraitist Eden Upton Eddiss was a fellow student and longtime friend of George Richmond. After completing his studies at the Royal Academy Schools, and dallying with landscape painting, he discovered his vocation as a portraitist. He was in particular demand for his likenesses of children, a genre in which he excelled. He painted many distinguished sitters, ranging from Paul Mark Roget, author of the original thesaurus, to Viscount Ebrington, Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. Many of his sitters became life-long friends; he exhibited annually at the Royal Academy.
