Description
James Montgomery Flagg (American/New York, 1877-1960), "Babes Out of the Woods", c. 1935, charcoal and conté crayon on paper, signed lower right, pencil-titled and printing instruction label en verso, 21 7/8 in. x 27 1/4 in., framed . Exh.: Museum of Arts and Sciences, Daytona Beach, FL, Exhibition No. 102. Note: A popular and talented illustrator, James Montgomery Flagg produced cartoons and artwork for magazines and advertisements and also completed portraits of famous friends from film and politics. Flagg is best known for his “I Want You” Uncle Sam illustration that he completed for World War I and which was later reproduced for World War II. The scene depicted here is titled “Babes Out of the Woods” and was likely a magazine illustration for Good Housekeeping magazine. The title purportedly references a song that was popular at the time by Jerome Kern and was also referenced in the contemporary short story of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The illustration portrays two couples in evening clothes, as one of the women opens a flower arrangement.
