Needlework Sampler, American, needlework size 21-1/4" x 21-3/4", framed size 25-1/2" x 26".  Elizabeth Latourette, 1849 Sampler info from Marty Campanelli.It was thought to be from Lebanon, NJ. Lebanon is in Hunterdon County. I, with my late husband, wrote a book on Hunterdon County, NJ samplers and also co-curated the NJ sampler exhibit at Morven Museum in Princeton in 2014. I have researched this sampler maker and no girl with that name, born about 1834, turns up in Hunterdon. There are two possible makers, both born around 1834, and located in Bedminster, Somerset County, NJ. Both their fathers were brothers. One Elizabeth was the daughter of Martin and Mary LaTourette, the other the daughter of Peter and Anna Catharine LaTourette. The only girl in Hunterdon with a similar, but not exact name is an Elsa C. LaTourette, daugher of Obediah LaTourette. According to the 1850 census she was born about 1832 and lived in Tewksbury Township, Hunterdon County. I could not locate any Elizabeth LaTourette from Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County. The sampler's patterns are generic Berlin wool work designs and not specific to any NJ area.
