Description
Scarce American Bible, almost 200 years old. The consignor states this is a Shaker Bible (see attribution below). Inside we have...."Collins's Stereotype Edition The Holy Bible: Containing the old and new Testaments: Together with the Apocrypha: Translated out of the original Tongues, and with the former Translations diligently compared and revised; with Canne's Marginal notes and references. To which are added An Index; An Alphabetical table of all the names in the old and new testaments, with their significations; Tables of scripture weights, measures and coin. Stereotyped by B & J Collins, New York Lunenburg, {MASS.} Printed and by W. Greenough. 1820."This Bible is sold by rare booksellers and that's about the only place you are going to find it. I found one for sale for $6,000.00 from Abe's Books. We believe the bible gets its Shaker attribution from the inscription in Photo 5. There was a community in Watervliet ohio, as well as NY. "Issachar Bates, one of the Shaker missionaries from New Lebanon, was later an elder for this emerging community. It was not until 1813 that a Union Village journal referred to the community as Water Vliet. The name Watervliet was assumed by the group to honor the first Shaker settlement. Over the years the community grew to 643 acres in Montgomery county and 160 acres in adjacent Greene County."
