c1830 Swiss Painted Porcelain on Gold Child & St Bernard Brooch


A very interesting early 19th Century, 18 carat gold mounted, painted on porcelain Brooch of a boy with a St Bernard dog.
The large brooch is Swiss and of fine quality and these were very popular in the early 1800s. The painted porcelain is rectangular with cut-off edges. The small boy and dog are laying together within a country scene. The gold mount is decorated with repousse scrolls and has a couple of gold cord chains hanging off it with pearl drop style tassels. The 18 carat (750) gold is not assayed, but has been tested. The brooch is worn on a suspension pin which has a safety lock clasp.
There are a couple of repairs to the delicate scrolls of the gold but otherwise the brooch is in very nice condition.
The brooch was bought together with a very nicely painted portrait oil on board of a young woman, in an early to mid-19th century style of dress and who is wearing the same brooch. The picture is in a rosewood style lacquer frame and glazed. We are selling the painting as a separate lot.
