Description
US: "Palestine" Freemason's lodge member's badge, c. early 20th Cent.; weight: 29.4g. Gilted metal: deer(?) head on Scottish coat of arms & Scots Gaelic motto "Cuidich In Rhi" ("Help the King"); manufactured by F.I.Gorton of N[orth] Attleboro, Mass. The round pendant-emblem is the "Shrine" emblem indicating Lodge affiliation with the "Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine" (A.A.O.N.M.S. - known as "Shriners"), founded in Manhattan in 1870, an appendant body of American Freemasonry who wear red 'fez' hats & known for social work. Until 2000, in order to be eligible for membership in the Shrine a person had to complete either the Scottish Rite or York Rite degrees of Masonry - which may explain the Scottish flag on this badge.
