Description
A beautifully painted miniature by Enrichetta Koelman, nee Narducci. Done in watercolor on organic material, it depicts a nice looking gentleman attired in a brown coat and black tie. It is carefully signed along the left edge "1850 Enrichetta Koelman f(ecit)". The painting is mounted in a 14k or 18k gold surround with a wide filigreed depth at the sides, a pin on the reverse, and a mother-of-pearl backing.
The condition is excellent, with no flaws. The size is 2" by 1 1/2" The depth is 1/8".
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Enrichetta Fiorini Narducci (1806 - 1892) was born in Italy and married Johan Hendrik Koelman, a Dutch artist. Although both of them are quite highly thought of as artists here and abroad, her best known work in the U.S. is her miniature portrait, done in 1841, of Mary Telfair, whose father was governor of Georgia. Mary was the primary benefactor of The Telfair Museums in Savannah, the oldest public art museum in the South.
