Description
Mid 19th century, 264 x 147 cm, Central Asia, middle Amu Darya valley
At each end of the red field covered in large arabesque palmettes and sickle leaves, a square with a yellow frame contains red snake figures surrounded by red dots. Although this field design – a combination of Persian and Turkmen devices – is very rarely seen, it is not surprising in Beshir rugs which often display design influences from Herat. – Distinct signs of age and wear, low pile, one major repiled section. New overcasting along the sides, damage to the kilim ends, badly soiled.
