Description
First quarter 20th century, 200 x 155 cm, South West Persia, Fars
Woven by sedentary Afshars, this rug displays a version of the Persian garden theme based on urban models which is only known to have been used in the Neyriz region. The boughs of a mighty three-trunked tree flanked by two vases fill the whole of the sulphur-yellow field. Birds perch in its branches, and four small goats are seen at the lower end of the field. The wide blue border is decorated with diagonal botehs. – Slight signs of age and wear, the sides and upper finish are original but show minor damage. The lower finish is somewhat reduced.
