Description
DESCRIPTION: 19th century trade tomahawk. Pike tomahawk with a flat blade balanced by a spike. Related examples are illustrated in Indian Tomahawks and Frontiers Belt Axes by Hartzler and Knowles on page 43. PROVENANCE: Collected by Theodore Kepner Long (1856 - 1947) and then by gift to the Carson Long Military Academy. Raised in Millerstown (Pa.), Long attended Yale Law School before relocating to North Dakota where he became publisher of the Mandan Pioneer. He rose to prominence in the legal profession becoming a States Attorney for lands West of the Missouri River in 1885 and Attorney for N.P.R.R. Bismark North Dakota in 1887. The then moved to Chicago in 1894 before returning to New Bloomfield Pennsylvania and founding Carson Long Military Academy in 1914. CONDITION: With wear as expected with age. MEASUREMENTS: 12-3/4" long.
