Assembled Japanese Export Carved Hardwood Six-Piece Bedroom Suite

first quarter 20th century, comprising a bed, h. 72", outer l. 91", outer w. 87", inner l. 67", inner w. 49", a mirrored vanity desk, h. 69-1/2", w. 55", d. 30", with chair, h. 41-1/2", w. 23", d. 18-1/2", two chests of drawers mounted with mirrors, h. 71-1/2", w. 41-1/4", d. 23-1/2" and h. 75-3/4", w. 49-3/4", d. 21", and a night stand, h. 29-1/4", w. 21", d. 18-3/4", all densely carved in relief with various designs of dragons, birds and blossoming orchids and foliage.

All pieces exhibit normal shrinkage, scrapes and abrasions to the finish, some chips losses to the edges and tips of carved elements, and other normal indications of age and use. There are locks on several of the case pieces, but no keys. Dressing table: Missing one drawer pull. Loss of two leaf tips at the carved leaves near the top of one leg, at the lower drawer. Chest with single mirror plate: The case exhibits side-to-side movement in its glue joints. The drawers continue to open and close freely. Chair: Loose at the juncture of the stiles and seat.
