STEINWAY & SONS CUSTOM ART CASE MODEL O PIANO
Item Details
Description
Steinway & Sons Hamburg Grand Model O piano, c.1929-1930, in custom painted Louis XVI style rosewood art case, tonal painted reserves of classical architectural ruins, bordered by trailing garlands and painted molding, signed Ponziani R. (?), raised on square tapered legs with bell flowers, joined by shaped stretchers, paper label at case interior R. Do.... Firenze, movement serial number 268790, case with number 939 BB to underside, top closed: approx 39"h, 57"w, 71"d, accompanied by corresponding bench, approx 20"h, 44"w, 20"d **Note: Steinway & Sons' archive indicates that this piano was shipped to Florence, Italy, on January 17, 1930** **Provenance: The Living Estate of Gale Galloway,s Villa Serena**

Condition Report: SOUNDBOARD AND BRIDGES: Original soundboard, with several cracks running the length of the soundboard. The ribs are not separating from the soundboard, but sound quality would normally be slightly diminished because of the cracks. Soundboard is securely glued to the rim at all points visible. No cracks or splits in the bridges. Good crown on the soundboard across all registers.
CASE and PEDAL ASSEMBLY:Professional after-market paintings cover all finished case pieces, which now appear faded and chipped. General color scheme is a light green. General theme appears to be classic Roman themes. Original design has not been altered on this "gate leg" model (six legs instead of three). Often these gate leg pianos were created to support the additional weight of a pneumatic player piano system. There is no evidence that this piano ever had a player piano system installed. Pedals and attached hardware (called "trapwork") is fully functional and all original.
ACTION and BACK-ACTION The action has been professionally restored previously (probably within the last twenty years) with non-Steinway parts. There areno markings on the wippens, hammers, or hammer shanks to identify the manufacturer of these parts. All of the action parts havebeen replaced and adjusted to professional standards, including the wippens, hammer shanks, hammer heads, and accompanyinghardware. The back action has been replaced and properly adjusted.
KEYS AND KEYTOPS: The keysticks are original but have been professionally restored with new front and balance railbushings and new backchecks, all non Steinway parts. The original ivory was either completely restored or replaced with new ivory. There are no cracks or splits in the ivory key tops. The black keys are original and may have been re-painted.
PINBLOCK, TUNING PINS, STRINGS AND HARDWARE: The pinblock is original but holding the tuning pins tight. It has not been replaced. During the previous restoration, new tuning pins, strings, and accompanying felt and hardware were replaced. The agraffes appear to be original, but restored and polished. The piano was found at 5% flat, evidence that the piano has been tuned within the last year.
