Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton (United Kingdom 1904 - 1980) Garden Room of North End House, watercolor and gouache on paper, 14 x 20 inches, signed lower right recto "Beaton" title verso, framed: This painting was part of the set design for the play "The Chalk Garden" by Enid Beaton, a 1955 Broadway play produced by Irene M. Selznick and designed by Cecil Beaton. The setting of the play was inspired by Bagnold's own garden at North End House in Rottingdean, near Brighton, Sussex, the former home of Sir Edward Burne-Jones. First staged in London at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in April 1956 , directed by Sir John Gielgud with Dame Edith Evans as Mrs. St Maugham, and Peggy Ashcroft as Miss Madrigal. Ingrid Bergman had been considered for this movie. Sandra Dee was considered for the part that Hayley Mills played. Dame Edith Evans was nominated in 1965 for an Oscar as Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
