After Souza - Media: Charcoal on paper - Condition: Fair condition, heavy yellowing on edges and tear along bottom - Provenance: Private collection, South America - Dimensions (cm): 25.5 by 18 - Dimensions (inches): 10 by 7 - Biography: Francis Newton Souza was an Indian artist known for his Expressionistic paintings depicting people and landscapes. His work features similar coloristic and graphic traits to the paintings of Paul Klee, and other German Expressionists. Born on April 24, 1924 in Goa, India, he was raised Roman Catholic by his mother, who worked as a seamstress. Souza went on to attend St. Xavier’s College in Bombay but was expelled for drawing graffiti on school property. Today, Souza’s work is in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. Though he spent most of his life after 1967 in New York, Souza died March 28, 2002 in Mumbai, India.
