Description
The Toby Jug is defined as a jug or pitcher in the form of a full-bodied character, while a Character Jug comprise(s) only the head or face, and often shoulders. CHARACTER JUGS ARE OFTEN CONFUSED WITH TOBY JUGS WHICH SHOW THE COMPLETE SEATED PERSON. These are all CHARACTER JUGS by ROYAL DOULTON. . ... Similar designs were produced by other potteries, first in Staffordshire, then around England, and eventually in other countries. First we have Lobster Man, 1967, D6617, selling at hammer down price of $125.....The Cardinal, noted by consignor as being Large, sells for $330 at auction.....Touchstone, sells at $165....John Peel sells at $50.....Long John Silver, 1951, D6335 sells for $72. It is thought that the Toby Jug was named after Sir Toby Belch, a character from Shakespeares Twelfth Night. They are all mostly shown to be jovial, fat men having had a bit too much to drink.
