Description
Rare Rookwood electroplated Standard glaze tyg with grape decoration in the silver and in the slip decoration, done in 1899 by Kataro Shirayamadani, most likely made expressly for the 1900 Paris Exposition. Marks include the company logo, which indicates the date, Special Shape number S 1558 and the incised cypher of the artist. The Rookwood electroplating involves the rim and one handle on which three dimensional carved grapes and vines are the most decorative aspect of the form. As with most examples, the pottery is carved with the design which is then plated with copper followed with a thin layer of silver. There is copper visible on the vine running up the handle, most likely from wear and not design. There are two mid body cracks alongside the silver handle, possible because of the added clay. There is also faint crazing and the decoration is rather dark. Height is 8 1/2 inches.
