Description
Impressive and large Iris glaze vase with 4 geese in flight painted by Albert Valentien in 1899. The geese in gray and white are finely detailed and contrast nicely with the pale peach ground. Marks include the Rookwood logo, which indicates the date, Special Shape number S 1410 B, incised W for White (iris) glaze and Valentien’s incised initials. Height 12 5/8 inches. Restoration to a neat hole in the bottom and scattered light crazing. A photo of the drill hole in the bottom before restoration comes with the vase. A slightly larger version of this Special Shape with magnolia decoration on the uncommon peach ground (also by Valentien) was sold in Rookwood XVII as lot 1360.
