Serving dish, small plate, jug, bowl, sugar bowl, large plate. A group of six Royal Doulton Pipes of Pan Seriesware shapes: One serving dish (Scene 2); One dessert or sandwich plate (Scene 2); One pitcher (Scene 2); One bowl with square scalloped edge (Scene 2); One sugar bowl (Scene 4); One large plate (Scene 5). Orange, green, cream, yellow. Among the most beloved Royal Doulton seriesware is the Pipes of Pan, which was produced for markets in the U.K. and Australia in a range of shapes. The Pipes of Pan was introduced into production in 1928 and withdrawn by 1940. This pattern has been included in the Australian section of Doulton seriesware because Waratah flowers, from a species of shrubs and trees native to the southeastern parts of Australia, and gum trees, which dominate the flora of Australia, feature prominently in each scene. There are six (6) recorded scenes and this group features seriesware from Scene 2, Scene 4, and Scene 5: In ancient Greek religion and myth, Pan is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, mountain ecologies, pastoral music and free-form musical composition. Pan is also connected to fertility and the season of spring. He has the legs, hindquarters, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr. In the 18th and 19th centuries. Pan became a significant figure in the Romantic movement of western Europe. Among other examples, The Pipes of Pan was an 1899 poem by Adrian Ross set to music by the English composer Edward Elgar.
