Item Details
Description
1840-1860s pie safe, 40" W x 51" H x 18" D, with great, hand-punched, full floral tin panels - these panels are very unusual as there are no mullions between the panels - fitted together to form one long panel per side and per door. All indicators lead to very probably made by the Fleming K. Rich Shop (1806-1861) by his family of Wythe County, Virginia. Constructed of cherry with yellow pine and poplar secondary woods in old dry red-wash surface, hand-cut / square nails, two dovetailed drawers over two doors, doors and case sides fitted with a fine full length single stem flower with multiple blooms punched tin decoration, original turned feet. This pie safe, previously unrecorded, has all of the unusual, exclusive, details of a Rich Shop pie safe - The Rich Shop typically produced pie safe cupboards 2-drawers over two-doors, tins punched from the inside out, turned legs, no mullions between tins and with chamfered underside of the drawer bottoms and dovetailed. Condition: top slight warping, wooden round pulls not original and possibly not original stained finish. Internet research produced this info regarding Rich Shop - "A prosperous furniture empire was born in 1830 when Fleming Kean Rich and Thomas Moyer united their talents as cabinet makers and businessmen. In the late 1820s, Fleming Rich moved to Wytheville, married Ann Catherine Moyers, and worked in his father-in-law's cabinetmaking shop. The firm of Moyers and Rich expanded their trade to include manufacture of pie safes, beds, wardrobes, sofas, signboards, and coffins." Requires third party or personal pick-up, in-house shipping not offered.
