Item Details
Description
Taino Tan Stone Cemi/Stamp Depicting Human to Frog Transition (1000-1500 CE). Cemis are ceremonial devices used for ritual display. Though the base is highly decorated with an engraved Anthropic figure, it has been determined this was only a design element and not a stamp. The base figure has several ghost figures, the legs become a face and if up-ended the original face takes on another personality. Very complex. Size: 2'' x 1.25'' x 3.25'' (5 x 3 x 8 cm). Provenance: Larry Roberts, author of Taino Sculpture: Art of the Gods.
