Item Details
Description
Late 1910s to early 1920s era wooden beer crate. Grossvater Beer, made by the Geo (George) J. (Jacob) Renner Brewing Co Akron, Ohio. George J. Renner purchased the brewery in 1888. Grossvater Beer was introduced in 1912 and became the anchor brand for the company for the next forty years. Grossvater is German for grandfather. Beer was brewed and sold from the Akron location since 1848 and while ownership changed hands several times this site housed the company that would become Ohio's longest-lasting brewery. The crate is in solid condition and structurally sound. Each corner edge has a strip of metal intended to help keep the crate intact. There is wear to the finish throughout and each side, where there is a cut out hand-hold, has a large painted area we did not try to remove. The sides also show a price of $0.75 for a crate of beer.
