Description
3rd-4th century AD. A rectangular terracotta brick with low-relief scene moulded into the upper face, depicting a mounted warrior advancing from the lefty with arm raised, the horse trampling a supine reptile with raised head beneath a tree, kneeling female onlooker to the right edge; probably an early representation of a legendary event (rescuing a maiden from a dragon) similar to that of St. George. 1.8 kg, 16cm (6 1/4"). Property of a London collector; formerly the property of Julie Newall; acquired by her husband in the 1970s; thence by descent. Similar legends in which a passing horseman defeats a predatory dragon in order to save a maiden and win her hand are known across the Near East and Mediterranean world from the Iron Age. One Classical Greek version involves Perseus and Andromeda, for example.
