"Faithful unto Death", a Roman soldier remaining on his post during the Vesuvius disaster, a genuine line engraving on steel after the painting Sir Edward John Poynter [1836-1919], engraved by F. Joubert, c. 1870s; printed on heavy stock paper; signed in plate "Painted by E.J. Poynter, R.A.." and "Engraved by F. Joubert"
Sir Edward John Poynter, (20 March 1836 in Paris - 26 July 1919 in London) was an English painter, designer, and draughtsman who served as President of the Royal Academy.
Jean Ferdinand Joubert de la Ferte (1810-1884) was a French engraver, photographer and inventor who developed new photographic techniques and engraved notable postage and revenue stamps of the United Kingdom and the Confederate States. He was also the engraver of the Halfpenny Yellow, the first postage stamp of Malta.
