In the early 19th century, France became one of the grand Central European hubs of graphic image production. The tiny Alsatian village of Wissembourg in the High Rhine region rose to printing prominence under Jean-Frederic Wentzel in 1836, when he began producing posters he called 'typoxylographics' (letterpress printing with stencil overlay). This poster is one of those early designs dating to the later part of his printing career.
