Description
1st-4th century AD. A carved schist frieze fragment of a bodhisattva (Avalokite?vara?) seated on a ledge; the base with recess to the forward face, seat with lattice and other detailing, draped tiered coverings; bodhisattva seated with head and upper body turned to the left, right arm braced on the right knee and leg folded beneath the body, left hand holding a censer in the lap; empty right sandal to the base; the figure with decorated turban and wavy hair, urna and pointed moustache, nimbus to the rear; mounted on a custom-made stand. 73.2 kg, 91cm including stand (35 3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; from his father's collection formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s.
