Kazan Watanabe, "Fishes" or "Carps" woodblock print from Kazan Gafu printed and published by Yoshkawa Kobunkan, Kyoto in 1911, Meiji Era. This is the original authentic first 1911 woodblock print of Kazan Watanabe's artwork. Certifications of Authenticity will be included upon buyers request.
Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841) was a Japanese painter, scholar and statesman member of the samurai class. He was born Watanabe Sadayasu in Edo (now Tokyo) to a poor samurai family, and his artistic talent was developed from an early age. His family served the lord of the Tahara Domain, located in present-day Aichi prefecture. Watanabe himself served the lord of Tahara as a senior counselor, one of his achievements being said to be protecting the domain from even a single death from starvation during the Tempo famine. He was heavily influenced by the artistic styles of the West, forming a unique style with elements of Japanese and European art.

Condition
Double page woodblock print, 32.3cm x 24.8cm [c. 12 3/4" x 9.3/4"], aging, some soiling and wear, some thins, old repair, rounded corners [see pictures], fair/good condition. The visible fold or page separation in the middle is an indication that the print is authentic.
