Description

Sir Humphry Davy ELEMENTS OF CHEMICAL PHILOSOPHY 1812 First Edition Antique English Chemistry Science Engraved Plates Errata Leather Binding

Title: Elements of Chemical Philosophy
Author: Sir Humphry Davy - Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet was a Cornish chemist and inventor. He is best remembered today for his discoveries of several alkali and alkaline earth metals, as well as contributions to the discoveries of the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine. Berzelius called Davy's 1806 "Bakerian Lecture On Some Chemical Agencies of Electricity" "one of the best memoirs which has ever enriched the theory of chemistry." Davy had a major influence on the history of science and medicine. He first synthesized nitrous oxide and noted its anaesthetic properties and he invented the Davy safety lamp to prevent explosions in coal mines. He was a 1st Baronet, President of the Royal Society (PRS), Member of the Royal Irish Academy (MRIA), and Fellow of the Geological Society (FGS).
Publisher: Printed for J. Johnson and Co.
City: London
Year: 1812
Printing Information: First Edition
Binding Style: Hardcover
Pagination: xiv/505 pages plus 12 plates
Width: 5.75" Height: 8.75"
Book Details: Listed as Volume I, Part I of this landmark work, this ultimately was the only entry ever published of the intended work. This writing is an account of those areas of chemistry in which Davy himself had worked while Part II, which was to cover the rest of science, never appeared.

The work contains an errata leaf and a total of twelve engraved plates follow the text. The plates are numbered from I to X with three entitled "Plate IV", presumably a printer's error.
Condition / Notes: This antique full-leather volume has been rebacked and is solidly bound with light external age/wear. The book has marbled edges and endpapers. An antique bookplate is affixed to the front paste-down endpaper. The pages are generally bright and clean with occasional light age toning and marginal, light foxing. The plates are well-preserved.

This volume has been collated and is complete. Page 227 displays an approximate 1/4" tear, and pages 321-324 display a 1/8" tear. On pages 404 –405, there is a liquid stain. Pages 479-497 display offsetting.
