"Holland", by Edmondo De Amicis, First American Edition, translated from the 13th edition of the Italian by Helen Zimmern. Illustrated from photographs with folding map in vol 2. Complete in two volumes, published by Henry T. Coates, Philadelphia in 1894. The photographs taken expressly for this edition by Dr. Charles L. Mitchell, Philadelphia, photogravures were engraved by A.W. Elson, Boston.

Volume 1 has five chapters on Holland, Zealand, Rotterdam, Delft, and The Hague.
Volume 2 has twelve chapters on Leyden, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Broek, Zaandam, Alkmaar, The Helder, The Zuyder Zee, Friesland, Groningen, From Groningen to Arnheim. Volume 2 ends with a fold out color map.

Edmondo de Amicis was an Italian novelist, journalist, poet and short-story writer.

Dr. Charles L. Mitchell was an interesting amateur photographer from Philadelphia who was a leading spokesman for the conservative faction of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia. He saw little originality in the pictorialist photographs that were increasingly exhibited in the society's annual Salon. In keeping with his scientific training, Mitchell preferred straightforward representational photography. Using his camera to record the beauty he found in nature, he made no attempt to alter his view through manipulation of the negative or print.
