Vince Lombardi Signed Check 6 Weeks before 1960 NFL Championship Game Against Philadelphia Eagles
Check signed by Vince Lombardi (1913-1970), legendary coach of the Green Bay Packers, as "Vincent Lombardi" on the "General Mgr." payee line at lower right. The check dated November 16, 1960 in the amount of $15.00 was made payable to Izzy’s Ambulance Service from the Green Bay Packers' payroll account at the Kellogg-Citizens National Bank of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Also signed by then sports franchise president Dominic Olejniczak. The pale green patterned check is stamped and canceled. Near fine. 8.25" x 3".
Lombardi was famous for saying, “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” This attitude helped him turn the Green Bay Packers, considered the National Football League's perennial losers, into a juggernaut. This check to an area ambulance service was signed just six weeks before Lombardi's Green Bay Packers faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1960 NFL Championship Game. It was a devastating loss in which the Packers stalled out 13 to 17. Never again, Lombardi promised.
The Packers won back-to-back NFL titles in 1961 and 1962, and the first two Superbowls in 1966 and 1967. Lombardi’s transformation of the team began in 1959, the same year Henry Jordan was traded to Green Bay. Lombardi shook up a stale organization, and within a year had the Packers on a winning streak. He served as the coach of the Packers from 1959 to 1967.
A terrific piece of sports memorabilia!
