This is the four-volume (394, 416, 395 & 428 pages) William Pickering (London) 1826 publication of James Boswell's "The Life of Samuel Johnson. LL.D." These have been elegantly re-bound (without bindery attribution) in full leather covers (app. 5.25" x 8.75"), which are scuffed, particularly to the spines (with 5 raised bands), which are missing label parts, and which have several areas of chipped surface. There are cracks to the sides of the spines, with weakness to some hinges, particularly the front hinge of Volume IV, which is loose to its top half. All the covers are attached, but that of Volume IV is particularly loose. The insides are in very good overall condition, with no stamps or other attachments, and no indelible writing. There are pencil notes to a few end pages. This set has the two fold-out facsimiles, on heavier weight paper, attached to volumes III and IV. The engraved Boswell portrait is the frontispiece to Volume II. These illustrated pages, and the pages adjacent to them, are sunned. Several text pages have light sunning, but almost all have none, and no other stains. The red-dyed page edges are clean and unfaded. The binding is secure throughout, with no loose or missing pages. There are no notable tears or creases. The accompanying photos are of this set.
