Description
A Rare North German Wrought Iron Mounted Oak Chest or "Stollentruhe", Westphalia Region, 15/16th cen. The large dark oak iron bound chest measures approx 71"L x 27"D x 24 Î_"H, with extensive decorative wrought iron strap-work throughout ending in flower head decorative clasps, and wrought iron studs. Originally for a variety of secure storage, transportation, and seating.
This type of chest with multiple iron straps loosely imitates the style of the Tuscan Gothic and was popular in Northern Europe during the 15th century. These chests were all of similar form but varied slightly in their carving and feet and manner of opening for instance the top, side and fall-front. Condition: The legs have been shortened, large fissure running through the lid, missing nail studs along iron trim, missing studs in flower centers, wood has worm holes throughout, does not have key, wear and oxidation to iron, missing nail stud on front lock decoration. Wax drips on lid, wood fill restorations on lid.
