Description

Title: Civil War Era Child's Folding, Hinged, Mourning Parasol

Additional Information: These all black small sized Parasol saw heavy use during the Civil War, when many fathers, and husbands, were lost. This one has an ebonized wooden handle with spiral carving at the top, and a goose neck handle. The 28" long Parasol folds down to 16" with a tapered brass ferrule, which raises up exposing a straight hinge, allowing the handle to fold in half. The crown raises up and is held in place with a typical umbrella spring mechanism. Between that spring and the top is another straight hinge, this one allowing the crown to shift right, or left, to help block the sun. We can find no maker's marks, or patent numbers on this cleverly designed piece. The diameter of the Parasol is 19". The black frame is complete and works well. The black fabric shows some wear, and even a few pinholes, commensurate with age, and use. The fabric, and most of the ruching is present. If it weren't for the black, mourning quality of this item, I might think it were meant for a large doll. That would be too maudlin, even for the Victorians.
