Author: Hardy, Thomas
Title: Winter Words in Various Moods and Metres
Place Published: New York
Publisher:Macmillan
Date Published: 1928
Description:
184 pages. Oblong 4to, loose sheets, set up mostly two pages per sheet on the rectos only, with a few sheets halved. First American Edition, advance page proofs.
A substantial, though slightly incomplete, set of the original letterpress page proofs of the first American edition of Hardy's last volume of poetry. Based on a pencil routing note in an unidentified hand on the outer leaf, this set was apparently sent by Macmillan to the Book League Monthly magazine, with published Winter Words, in a somewhat different order, in their December, 1928, issue. The New York Macmillan edition was published in November, and allowing for production time and the usual post-dating of periodical issues, the Book League Monthly would have by necessity had to work from page proofs. The absence here of a few poems cannot be accounted for, but their removal was apparently conscious because the instances of halving of the sheets correspond to the omissions.
