Native American, Southwestern USA, central Arizona to the Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, Salado Culture, ca. 1275 to 1450 CE. A pretty bowl with a corrugated, beige exterior and a glossy, black interior. The body of the bowl flares outward slightly at its rolled rim, and the base is concave, with a spiral decoration reflecting the coil method used to create it. Gila bowls, like this one, tend to have a lifeline of dark paint around the rim. This pottery type had the widest range of any in the ancient Southwest, traded across hundreds of miles and used in the household, ceremonies, and burials. This widespread and unified decorative style has led archaeologists to suggest that the designs are iconography of a large, regional cult. Size: 4.7" W x 2.95" H (11.9 cm x 7.5 cm)
