Description
comprising eleven pieces of a larger group, all specially designed and created with and for Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Armstrong by Betty Woodman (American, 1930-2018). Largest element 34" long, 10" wide, all signed by the artist except the latticework pieces. This group of eleven is the remainder of an original ceramic integrated sculptural group comprising thirteen or more pieces which was specially designed, created and installed by Betty Woodman in 1986 in the master bathroom of Hoover Hall, the colonial revival house owned by the Armstrong's on Fishers Island, NY. The house was destroyed by fire in 2003 and thereafter replaced by a striking modernist glass house designed by architect Thomas Phifer & Partners. The original installation is photographed on page 220 of Armstrong's book "A Singular Vision", The Quantuck Lane Press, NY 2012, which documents the history of and the collection within Hoover Hall and Hooverness. At least three of the original collage pieces were lost in the fire. Woodman and Armstrong, who was the director of the Whitney Museum, were good friends. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist.
