Description
1873 1ed Charles Darwin Expression of Emotion Evolution Human Behavior Dutch
“One general law, leading to the advancement of all organic beings, namely, multiply, vary, let the strongest live and the weakest die.”
― Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species
A rare first Dutch edition of Charles Darwin’s “Expression of Emotions”. ‘Expressions’ was Darwin’s third great work on his evolutionary theory, and was quite important, even though it was not nearly as popular as the prior two works, ‘Origin’ and ‘Decent’. Darwin explores human behavior and how it relates to genetics, especially that of emotions. He dives deep into emotions such as anxiety, grief, and guilt, and how they impact human growth and evolution. Freeman says of this book,
“The Expression of the Emotions is an important member of the evolutionary set, and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment… [Darwin concluded that] the chief expressive actions exhibited by man and by the lower animals are now innate or inherited."
