Description
(1788-1847) English banker and Quaker evangelical minister, a noted prison reformer whose views fomented the schism between Gurneyite and Wilburite Quakers. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p., 1844], to his sister and fellow prison reformer Elizabeth Fry, transmitting a prayer. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. On the verso, his wife Eliza transmits a prayer of her own, also signing at the conclusion in black ink. Shows mounting remnants to the verso and several pencil biographical inscriptions, else very good. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Gurney, bearing his facsimile signature.
