Silver gelatin photograph from 1942 showing men and women workers employed to build the Pentagon Building, headquarters of the U.S. Dept. of Defense, in Arlington, VA. The notable image shows African American workers at the rear of the group next to the columns. The Pentagon was built to maintain racial segregation between whites and blacks, with separate dining and toilet facilities.
The sepia toned photograph is inscribed with a notation at the center top: "Employees of McNulty Bros. Co. and Krafft Murphy Co. Metal Furring, Lathering, Plastering and Acoustical Tile Contractors, Pentagon Bldg. War Dept. Arlington, Va. October 8. 1942." Inscribed in the upper right: "Tenschert Photo 1524 K St. NW No. 2."
