Description
Gouachce on paper, framed. Featuring a cubist composition. Signed L. Popova in Cyrllic characters on the lower left corner. Attributed to Lyubov Popova (Russian, 1889-1924). 25 x 20.5 cm (9.8 x 8.1 inches). Frame size: 37 x 32 cm (14.6 x 12.6 inches). PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
A key figure in the Russian avant-garde movement (popular in the period between the Russian Revolution of 1917 and 1932), Liubov Popova’s (1889-1924) experimentation in abstract painting produced some of CubismÂ’s most innovative works. PopovaÂ’s overlapping planes of painterly architectonics, as she called them (stemming from Kasimir MalevichÂ’s “architectonics”), created dynamic interactions between shapes and colors in both abstract and semi-figurative paintings, often to three-dimensional effect. Late in her career, and inspired by political events in Russia, Signed and attr. Liubov Popova on lower right corner. Popova developed an interest in Suprematism and eventually Constructivism, turning her attention to industrial design, which she deemed more useful art form.
