Description
Oil on canvas 30 x 24 in. (canvas), 33 x 27 in. (framed). Lynn L. Gertenbach is a California impressionist landscape painter of places near her home by Malibu State Park, near Los Angeles. Gertenbach grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, and during high school lived in Denver, Colorado. She received a commercial art degree from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1960 in Denver. She was tutored by John Jellico, the school's founder who nominated her in 1996 for the Institute's Hall of Fame. After graduation, she became a fashion illustrator while attending night classes at the Layton School of Art. She also studied fine-art painting with Phil Gilkerson and Sergei Bongart, and of Bongart, said "the Russian way of handling both portraits and landscapes, as well as the bravura of brushwork, felt right for me." (Belfor, 53)Living in Laguna Beach, she met the watercolorist Arul Raj, and at his invitation, she traveled in India with him, his wife and daughter and did plein-air painting. This was the first of five trips around the world with that family, all of whom were artists. From these trips, she filled her notebooks with many sketches, which served her well in future studio works. Included in these travels was Peru, where she did Amazon Jungle scenes and Machu Picchu. The first trip to India led to an exhibition in Bombay of her work and that of the Raj family followed by exhibitions at the Brand Library Museum and the Laguna Beach Festival of the Masters. She also studied Indian music with Ravi Shankar, famous for his mastery of the sitar, and she painted several portraits of him that were used on four of his albums. In addition she did a portrait of Zubin Mehta, which hangs in the halls of the Montreal Symphony. In 1986, Lynn Gertenbach became a founding member of the Plein-Air Painters of America, then newly organized. Since then she has been in every one of their yearly exhibitions and also teaches workshops for them. She finds plein-air painting exhilarating and quickening to her senses. Source: Carl B.
