Description
1688 AD. Obv: James II riding right with IACOBVS II D G MAG BRI FRAN ET HB REX legend. Rev: cruciform arms linked by chains with VAL 24 PART REAL HISPAN legend. KM# Tn 5.4. See Portable Antiquities Scheme, reference LON-D20457 (this token, with copy of database extract"). 9.07 grams . Found tidal foreshore, river Thames, London, 2013. These pewter (lead/tin alloy) tokens were made for use in the reign of James II (circa 1688) for use on American colonial plantations and were issued current at 1/24th of a Spanish real; in August 1688 John Holt, agent for a number of tin mines, petitioned the King for the right to produce 'tin' tokens for use in the American plantations; several have been discovered in the UK suggesting that they might also have seen unofficial usage here, perhaps similar to the 'Gunmoney' coinage of the same period used in Ireland.
