Description
Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals including six accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: T-672) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 25 x 25 x 27 mm. This has a round flat face, and flat back on which is mounted a tall stalk handle ending in a large pierced loop. The design on the face is an abstract pattern of raised lines lines including two spirals and other curving lines. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. The object has been cracked by pressure in the ground, but otherwise it is in good condition. The metal is sound.'; T-729) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 29 x 29 x 26 mm. This has a round flat face, and back which rises steeply to a round loop handle. The design on the face is in raised lines and consists of a simple cross with L-shapes filling the quarters so created. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. There is some wear and damage to the face, but the metal has been conserved and generally the piece is in fair condition.'; V-947) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 20 x 31 x 25 mm. This bears the shape of what is depicted. The face is flat and compartmented, while the back is also flat with rounded edges and a stalk handle ending in a pierced loop. The design shows a bird flying sideways. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is a rare design and in good condition.'; D-2) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 27 x 27 x 27 mm. This has a flat compartmented face, and a flat back with rounded edges and a stalk handle with loop on the top. The design is difficult to interpret, but may be based on a horned animal with head turned backwards. The seal is roughly round. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. There is a little damage to the edge, but otherwise it is in good condition.'; K-10) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 26 x 25 x 26 mm.This has a round face, and the back rises with decreasing diameter to an oval piece handle. The face has an outer rim from which three curving lines move inwards and the spiral around. Avancant space is filled with an inverted V-shape. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. It is a little known style of object, and, though encrusted, is in very good condition.'; V-820) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 36 x 35 x 38 mm.This has a round flat face, and a back which rises steeply to a big pierced loop handle. The design on the face, done in raised lines, consists of three motifs beginning at the edge with inverted V-shapes then continuing with a single curling line. Two of the V-shapes have short strokes under the curls. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is a large example of its kind, and the loop and rim are worn, but otherwise it is in good condition.' 263 grams total, 17-36mm (1/2 - 1 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [10]
