Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador/Colombia, Carchi-Narino region, ca. 750 to 1500 CE. A charming hollow-cast ceramic sculpture of a seated coquero (or coca chewer). He sits on a stool, part of an integral base plinth, his long and spindly limbs providing for an amusing appearance. He wears a loincloth around his waist and a thin headband across his forehead, but appears to be otherwise nude with exposed genitalia. His face displays almond-shaped eyes, a petite nose, full lips, broad ears, and a bulging cheek indicative of being filled with masticated coca leaves. A small perforation atop his head was used during the firing process, and is a delightful example of Carchi figural pottery! Size: 7.625" H (19.4 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
