Title: The Unknown River
Author: Philip Gilbert Hamerton - Philip Gilbert Hamerton was an English artist, art critic and author. His first literary attempt, a volume of poems, was unsuccessful, leading him to devote himself for a time entirely to landscape painting. He camped out in the Scottish Highlands, where he eventually rented the former island of Inistrynich in Loch Awe, upon which he settled with his wife Eugénie Gindriez, the daughter of a French republican magistrate, in 1858.

From the Preface: “It may interest readers who share the author’s boating propensities to know that the voyage was undertaken in a canoe fabricated by his own hands of paper, on a light skeleton of laths. The whole of the voyage was accomplished in this fragile craft; but it is only honest to add that she became leaky before it was over, and was condemned as unriverworthy at the end..The verses at the beginning of this book were written during the late war, in anticipation of an attack from the Germans, which took place shortly afterwards; and I witnessed the combat for many hours on the banks of the river, between Garibaldi, who defended Autun, and a strong body of Bavarians who attacked it,--not exactly the moment for descending the river in a paper canoe!â€
Condition / Notes: This antique volume shows well, with some typical indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and rubbing. The text block is cracked, with some loose pages. Text and illustrations are clear and crisp through mild age toning.
