Edwin Reed BACON AND SHAKE-SPEARE PARALLELISMS 1902 Literary Controversy Theory Francis Bacon Criticism Authorship English Literature William Shakespeare

Title: Bacon and Shake-speare Parallelisms
Author: Edwin Reed
Publisher: Charles E. Goodspeed
City: Boston
Year: 1902
Binding Style: Hardcover
Pagination: 441 pages
Width: 6.5" Height: 9.75"
Book Details: This antique volume is bound in gray paper-covered boards with a cream cloth spine and spine label. An inscription by the author appears on a front flyleaf, and the author’s signature under the frontispiece portrait.

From the introduction: “In the present volume I rest the argument for Bacon as the sole author of these Poems and Plays on a single point, viz., identity of thought and diction between them and his acknowledged works. It is confidently believed that the passages, quoted herein on either side, exhibit the warp and woof of but one fabric, running in and out, over and under, from end to end.â€

The Baconian theory of Shakespeare authorship holds that Sir Francis Bacon, philosopher, essayist and scientist, wrote the plays which were publicly attributed to William Shakespeare. Various explanations are offered for this alleged subterfuge, most commonly that Bacon's rise to high office might have been hindered were it to become known that he wrote plays for the public stage. Thus the plays were credited to Shakespeare, who was merely a front to shield the identity of Bacon.
Condition / Notes: This antique volume displays some typical indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and rubbing. The binding and text block are sound. Text remains clear and crisp. Some pages remain uncut. The front board and and lower right corner of the text block through page ten exhibit signs of moisture.
