Description
1867 Harper’s Monthly Magazine Civil War Memoir Illustrated Turks Greeks Webster

Harper's Magazine is a 19th-century monthly periodical of literature, politics, culture, finance, and the arts. Launched in June 1850, it is the second-oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the U.S.

This issue of ‘Harper’s New Monthly Magazine: No. 207, August 1867,’ contains personal memoirs from the Civil War, including the Battle of Cedar Mountain and Personal Recollections Of the War by D. H. Strother, and Port Hudson, by J. W. De Forest. This issue is full of excellent illustrations as well.

“The extent and quality of illustrations uniquely characterized Harper magazines. The monthly had "the most striking pictures for many years," especially of exotic places, and thus faced "no competition" until the 1870s, according to the firm's historian J. Henry Harper” (p. 88)
