Large late 19th century Russian Icon panel depicting the MOTHER OF GOD "Joy of all who sorrow" with attached coins.
Attached to the Russian Icon are 12 small coins, half-kopekek, dated 1898 1897, inserted into the panel (coins are from the Saint Petersburg mint).
Depicting the Madonna surrounded by angels and those seeking relief from various aliments, the icon is referencing the miracle at Klochka.
Medium: tempera, gold leaf and gesso on wood.
Made up of three panels joined together.
Dimensions: 17.5 in. hgt. x 14.5 in. wd. x 1.25 in. dp.
Condition: Generally good condition for size and age. The structure of the board at the top shows a vertical shponka-the spine of baton inserted into the top end of the wood to discourage warping (18th-19th century practice) paint lifting down one vertical line suggest the board is made of three panels joined together, and the seam where they join started to separate taking paint with it.
