Description
Antique crater - a handled urn vase, made in the manner of ancient Egyptian pottery during the Egyptian Revival period of the mid 19th century. Painted terracotta earthenware, handles on each side and a banded hieroglyphic pattern on the body. Marked on the underside - FGW 972 - the initial mark of the factory and pattern number. Made by Majolikafabrik F. Gerbing Witwe, Bodenbach, Austro-Hungary (now, Podmokly, Czech Republic). This mark was used during the period 1851-1860. After the death of Friedrich Gerbing, Sr. in 1848, his wife continued to run the business, which had many struggles. In 1859, a successful partnership with Prussian businessman Julius Stephan revitalized the factory and in 1861 it became known as Gerbing & Stephan. Measurements: Approx. 8.5" high, 7.5" handle to handle, 7" widest diameter.
