Book Details: This large folio-sized volume is bound in brown cloth with red lettering to the front board. Full-page photographic illustrations and an elaborate color frontispiece enhance the text.

From the introduction: "Renaissance Architecture in Spain could not be fully appreciated without examining the towering wrought-iron grilles, or Rejas, of the period. These exhibit a domination over the stubborn material never attained elsewhere. The Spanish iron-worker became a veritable magician; he made the heaviest of metals seem mere gossamer; he turned the cheapest into something priceless. Not only did he surpass the limits of his material, but he converted the Reja, which had hitherto been nothing more than an architectonic accessory, into a colossal creation that ceased to be tributary to its surroundings and stood per se as a monumental achievement."

An autographed photo of Archer M. Huntington is laid in at the beginning of the text. This, coupled with a card affixed to the front board, suggests that Huntington apparently gifted this book to a close friend. Huntington (1870-1955) is primarily known for his scholarly works in the field of Hispanic Studies and for founding The Hispanic Society of America in New York City. The society, founded in 1904, is a museum and rare books library whose collections of Hispanic materials are unrivaled outside Spain.
Condition / Notes: This antique volume displays some typical indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and rubbing. There is some soiling to the boards, primarily at the lower right corner, including the text block. The hinges are slightly cracked, however the text block and binding remain firm. The text and illustrations remain clear and crisp through mild age toning.
