Lee received a knighthood in 1911.

William Shakespeare - William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet, and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Book Details: In this lot of two antique volumes about Shakespeare include a very large leatherbound facsimile with raised bands and gilt lettering on a red spine label. Also included is a supplemental folio with a paper wrapper and black stamped lettering.

The large antique volume is an author-signed copy (by Lee) and a limited edition hand numbered 423 of 1000 copies. From the title page: "Being a Reproduction in Facsimile of the First Folio Edition 1623 from the Chatsworth Copy in the Possession of The Duke of Devonshire, K.G. With Introduction and Census of Copies by Sidney Lee."

"Mr. William Shakespeare's Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies is the 1623 published collection of William Shakespeare's plays. Modern scholars commonly refer to it as the First Folio. The First Folio is considered one of the most influential books ever published in the English language.

"Printed in folio format and containing 36 plays it was prepared by Shakespeare's colleagues John Heminges and Henry Condell. It was dedicated to the "incomparable pair of brethren" William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke and his brother Philip Herbert, Earl of Montgomery (later 4th Earl of Pembroke).

"Although eighteen of Shakespeare's plays had been published in quarto prior to 1623, the First Folio is arguably the only reliable text for about twenty of the plays, and a valuable source text even for many of those previously published. The Folio includes all of the plays generally accepted to be Shakespeare's, with the exception of Pericles, Prince of Tyre, The Two Noble Kinsmen, and the two lost plays, Cardenio and Love's Labour's Won."
Condition / Notes: This author signed limited edition antique set shows well.

The book shows moderate age/wear externally concentrated at the extremities, including blackening in some areas, chips and rubbing, and the front cover is separated but present. The supplement shows chipping along the bottom edge, edge wear, and marginal loss to most pages along the lower 4 inches of the spine edge, not into the text.

The bindings are secure and the text block in the volume is fully intact. Pages are bright and clean with light toning, slight foxing, and edge wear.
